Defining the Needs of and Assisting UK Aged Merchant Navy Veterans

The Institute of Public Care is delighted to be working with Seafarers UK and Nautilus Welfare Fund to deliver a Libor funded project focused on developing a better understanding of the size, location, health and social care needs of the Veterans from the Merchant Navy, RFA and Fishing communities and their spouses/partners. In addition to raising the public profile of these communities the project will help establish a set of strategic priorities to inform future service development.

The project’s initial survey results indicated a wide range of experience of conflict around the world, including the Falklands, the Second World War, and the Far East. Respondents reported some directly attributable physical and mental impact of this experience and we are now exploring this in more detail through individual interviews. We have also started our evaluation of two veterans services so as to better understand how the needs of these communities can best be met.
