Understanding the needs of older merchant navy veterans
The Institute of Public Care is delighted to be working with Seafarers UK and Nautilus Welfare Fund to deliver a Libor funded project focused on developing a better understanding of the size, location, health and social care needs of the Veterans from the Merchant Navy, RFA and Fishing communities and their spouses/partners.
Although there has been some research on the numbers and needs of former MN seafarers and their dependants, relatively little is known about their needs or the effectiveness of any services specifically developed to meet those needs.
The project’s initial survey results indicated a wide range of experience of conflict around the world, including the Falklands, the Second World War, and the Far East. Respondents reported some directly attributable physical and mental impact of this experience and we are now exploring this in more detail through individual interviews.
Read our interim report of findings from the first stage of this research. The results of this project will help to inform future developments in services as well as raise awareness of the potential veteran status of Merchant Navy seafarers.
