Surviving the pandemic - new challenges for adult social care and the social care market

For the past decade there has been a constant cry from the adult social care sector that it is underfunded and that it is on the brink of collapse. This new discussion paper by IPC Associate, Professor John Bolton, looks at how many councils have avoided the predicted collapse over the period of austerity (2010-2020), but highlights new problems that have emerged during the challenge of meeting the recent pandemic, Covid-19, and how these might be the issues that push social care 'over the edge'.

Drawing on a number of previous papers developed by Professor Bolton,
this paper explores these new challenges and how can the care provider sector survive after the pandemic?
