IPC prepared a briefing for the Housing LIN on ‘active ageing and the built environment’ commissioned by Public Health England.
The briefing considers how the built environment can help to promote and sustain active ageing – the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. The built environment and well-designed outdoor spaces can enhance the long-term health and wellbeing of those who use them regularly, reduce the risk of falls, promote physical activity and reduce social isolation.
The research includes a wide range of case studies which offer examples of good and emerging practice from across the country and provides an extensive list of resources for further information. It will be useful for people working in social housing, local government and the care and support sectors, adding to the available knowledge about how to link the built environment to the important priority of active ageing.
