This report, originally published in 2019 has been updated in 2020. It includes new guidance and case studies to highlight a broader range of good practice in supporting the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities including those with profound and multiple needs. For example, by using new technology, making annual health checks accessible and offering more opportunities to engage in healthy lifestyles. It also highlights the training and skills that are required for people in a care coordinator role.
It is widely acknowledged that people with learning disabilities experience poorer health than the general population and too many people with a learning disability die prematurely. Our research included listening to the views of people with learning disabilities, their parents and carers about what they felt would make a positive difference and help to close the gap, as well as examples of innovative practice in health and social care throughout the UK.
