Since our establishment in 1987, the Institute of Public Care (IPC) at Oxford Brookes University has been at the forefront in supporting improvement and development across the varied public care landscape. Continuing to build on a foundation of over three decades of pioneering work, IPC focuses on enhancing community well-being through education, research, and evidence-based practices. We aim to create a collaborative environment where academics, practitioners, and policy-makers can come together to address the complex challenges within public care.
Our vision is a society where everyone has access to equitable, efficient, and effective care services that promote health, resilience, and social inclusion. IPC is committed to driving innovation and excellence in public care, influencing policy, and shaping the future of health and social services.
The Institute of Public Care (IPC) is committed to fostering strong collaborative partnerships with a variety of organisations throughout the UK to drive improvements in public care.
We partner with NHS entities such as Integrated Care Systems and Foundation Trusts, working at the forefront of healthcare planning and service delivery to ensure that outcomes meet the highest standards of care.
We provide robust support to councils and local government bodies, helping to shape effective social care and housing strategies, service redesigns, and operational improvements, that matter to their communities.
Our commitment extends to the independent and voluntary sectors, where we support providers in their vital work of delivering care and support services, with strategies that are sustainable and person-centred.
We engage with central governments and national bodies across the UK. Our collaborations involve policy development, system design, and research, with the goal of shaping evidence-based public care systems.
At the heart of the Institute of Public Care (IPC) is our multidisciplinary team. From directors who lead our strategic vision, to consultants who spearhead our research and evaluations, and the support staff who ensure the seamless operation of our programmes, each team member brings a wealth of expertise and a shared commitment to improving public care.
We are committed to developing a diverse, equal and truly inclusive workplace and community. Celebrating difference is the right thing to do. It will also help us with our aim: to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens and communities. We developed the Get Experience in Applied Research (GEAR) programme to support early career researchers and post-graduate students at Oxford Brookes University who are from an ethnically diverse background. Find out more about equality, diversity and inclusion at Brookes on the University’s webpage for staff and information for students.
Acknowledging the critical need for environmental sustainability, Oxford Brookes declared a Climate Emergency in 2021. Our pledge is to achieve carbon net zero by 2040, highlighting our active role in combating climate change. The IPC is at the forefront of assisting partners to navigate the implications of climate change and to enhance their resilience against climate risks.
