Safeguarding in the context of adoption and special guardianship – insights from the webinar

The webinar

On 26 January, more than 160 professionals from across England and Wales attended one of our series of research and practice webinars, focused on safeguarding within adoptive and special guardianship families.

The session presented findings from a study supported by the Nuffield Foundation and conducted by IPC in partnership with the University of Birmingham. The research examined safeguarding experiences within adoptive and special guardianship families across five local authority areas in England and Wales.

IPC shared key insights from the study, including:

  • The nature of safeguarding concerns identified and the primary sources of harm experienced by children
  • Families’ experiences of becoming adopters or special guardians
  • The availability, range and quality of ongoing support services
  • Barriers to trust, engagement and support over time
  • Families’ experiences of safeguarding interventions

Feedback

The webinar was well received by attendees, who highlighted the clarity, relevance and practical value of the findings:

“Highly interesting and relevant to my field of work.”

“A very clear presentation of the evidence and its implications for adoption, SGOs and safeguarding.”

“I valued the opportunity to hear directly about the research process and the findings, which were presented clearly and accessibly.”
