Children’s Care Purchasing and Brokerage

Course Overview

The Institute of Public Care (IPC) and the Commissioning Alliance have developed a new short course aimed at social care staff who work in care placement, brokerage or purchasing roles. The Children’s Care Purchasing and Brokerage course is designed to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge required to effectively manage and broker care placements for children. This two-day programme provides a deep dive into the legal, regulatory, and quality frameworks governing children’s social care, aiming to foster best practices aligned with national agendas and enhance participants’ ability to deliver high-quality, value-driven care services.

Booking and Cost

The course fee is £500 per person, with a discounted rate of £400 available for Commissioning Alliance Members. The next course for children’s services care placement or brokerage officers will be held online on the following dates: October 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th, 2024.

Course Content and Format

This short course is delivered in four half-day online sessions, providing a flexible learning environment for professionals in children’s care services. The course covers the following key areas:

  • Context and Legislation: An overview of the legal, regulatory, and quality frameworks governing children’s social care.
  • Demand and Supply: Analysis of the social care market and its impact on service provision and placement decisions.
  • Commissioning: Understanding the commissioning cycle and your role in planning and procuring effective care services.
  • Managing Referrals: Strategies for managing and challenging referrals to ensure optimal care outcomes.
  • Purchasing and Procurement: Best practices for securing high-quality services and achieving value for money.
  • Negotiation and Accountability: Developing negotiation skills and understanding accountability in provider relationships.
  • Contract Management and Monitoring: Techniques for managing contracts and the importance of data collection for service evaluation.
  • Transitions and Pathway Planning: Planning for transitions between services to ensure continuity and quality of care.

Accreditation

Participants have the option to accredit their learning from this short course and receive an award from Oxford Brookes University, equivalent to 10 CATS credits at the undergraduate level. This accreditation can significantly contribute to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). To obtain the accreditation, you will need to attend additional support sessions and complete an assessed work-based project. The accreditation process incurs an additional fee of £300 per person.
