IPC Review of Occupational Therapy Best Practice in Adult Social Care – Review Findings Webinar

Overview

In late 2025, an English local authority commissioned the Institute of Public Care (IPC) Oxford Brookes University to support them to understand more about effective models for occupational therapy (OT) within adult social care responsibilities.

This work formed part of their work to ensure that they are able to articulate its OT requirements, drawing on statutory duties and effective practice from elsewhere and, to work collaboratively with colleagues across their Integrated Care Board (ICB) to make this work in practice.

In order to aid this process, IPC carried out a rapid desk-based review of current legislation, recommendations and examples of good practice, and conducted 1:1 interviews with local authority areas of interest. IPC then produced a report specifically to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the social care responsibilities for Occupational Therapy for adults?
  2. What do ‘good’ arrangements for delivering statutory adult social care OT look like?
  3. What do good joint (social care, housing, health) arrangements look like?

The webinar is an opportunity to hear about the answers to these questions and to give participants the opportunity to offer their thoughts on the considerations described in the report and our emerging ideals on the model of OT support.

Agenda

The outcome of the session is to develop a consensus on the following questions:

  1. Do the elements and characteristics of ‘good practice’ described in the report, align with your own experiences?
  2. How do these align with your current arrangements and early ideas about a future model for OT?
  3. What advice would you offer participants on what and how to prioritise the considerations offered by IPC in their report on the model for OT?

Audience

This webinar is particularly relevant for:

  1. Occupational Therapists (adults services)
  2. Adult social care managers for local authorities
  3. Health leaders in areas where there is a collaboration between health and the local authority for service delivery of adult OT services.
