In a recent thought leadership article produced by Dr Melanie Henwood, IPC Visiting Research Fellow, we explored the reflections of unpaid carers on their experiences of support and highlighted the importance for carers of being recognised and heard; being supported, being cared about and having a life outside caring. This was based on our engagement with a local authority currently developing a new approach to its action plan for carers. Many of the issues we identified are enduring – they’ve been documented in research over decades – and are likely to be the experience across other councils.

Dr Melanie Henwood OBE is a health and social care researcher with considerable experience of health and social care integration and the interface between services, particularly in areas such as hospital discharge, continuing health care, and self funders. She has particular interests in qualitative research; understanding people’s experiences and giving a voice to their stories.
